O Kun de Kun Falls

O Kun de Kun Falls

O Kun de Kun FallsLocated north of Bruce Crossing, O Kun de Kun Falls is a gorgeous plunge waterfall.  Only a handful of waterfalls around Lake Superior are plunge falls. You can go behind the falls, but you need to be careful and watch your footing.  O Kun de Kun Falls is also one of the largest waterfalls in Ontonagon County.  There is even a small campsite located below the falls.

The trailhead to the falls is located on the east side of US 45 7.8 miles north of Bruce Crossing. There are signs for the parking area however the hike itself has no signs or fences. The trail to the falls is actually a part of the North Country Trail and is a very scenic and wild hike. Before you reach the main falls you will reach a smaller 10′ falls upstream.  The larger falls is just a short distance downstream. The trail crosses a suspension bridge below the falls.

There are no fees for the hike and parking is also free.  This is a great spot to visit in the winter as well.  While the hike will be harder due to heavy snowfall, the frozen falls make the effort worth it.  Since O Kun de Kun Falls drops vertically you can even climb behind the ice if you are very careful and adventurous.

Directions

You will find the trailhead and parking area on the east side of US-45, 7.8 miles north of Bruce Crossing (it will be just past Burma Road). There are brown signs for the North Country Trail are on either side of the trailhead. You can park here and head east down the gated forest road.
