How to Hike to Frohling Falls
If you’re ready to explore Frohling Falls for yourself, here’s your guide on how to get there, what to bring, and what to expect during your hike.
1. How to Get There
Frohling Falls is located a short distance from Marquette, MI, making it an easy trip for anyone visiting the Upper Peninsula. The exact location is not widely publicized, as the falls are situated on private property, but here is some directions from a recent visitor:
We found these falls today after patiently searching and re-reading directions for 2 hrs 😂 So I thought I’d post a helpful hint. You’re looking for Sporley Lake Road on the north side of M-94. The road is NOT signed but GPS will say it’s Sporley Lake Road. (There’s a signed Sporley Lake Road on the south side of M-94, but that’s not the correct road!) As you turn onto the unsigned road you’ll see a SEASONAL ROAD sign and below it, a sign saying “ATTENTION – Not Sporley Lake Road – No Outlet – Turn Around Here”…we drove in. We parked at the first fork to the right and as we exited our vehicle, were met by a lady in a truck who stopped, said she owns the property, and lets people enter to see the Falls! She gave us directions from that fork and we walked from there. Followed the fork to the right, veering left up a short, washed-out hill and then continued following the road until it led us to the river (maybe 2 miles from where we parked). Go downstream a short walk and you’ll hear the Falls.
2. Where to Park
Since the area is privately owned, parking near Frohling Falls is limited, and you’ll need to make sure you’re not blocking any driveways or private roads. Please make sure to double-check that you’re parked legally and not intruding on private land.
3. What to Wear and Bring
The hike to Frohling Falls is moderate in difficulty, and the trail can be uneven and rocky in some areas, so it’s important to come prepared:
- Hiking boots: A sturdy pair of hiking boots with good grip is recommended, especially after rain when the trail might be slippery.
- Waterproof gear: If you’re visiting in spring or fall, a waterproof jacket and pants will keep you comfortable, as the weather can be unpredictable.
- Camera or smartphone: For those looking to capture the beauty of Frohling Falls, don’t forget your camera or smartphone.
- Snacks and water: It’s always a good idea to bring water and a small snack, as the hike can take a couple of hours round-trip.
4. Respect the Private Property
As mentioned, Frohling Falls is on private land, so please be mindful of the privilege of being able to visit. Make sure to stay on marked trails, avoid straying onto other parts of the property, and take any trash with you when you leave.
